 Hola mis hermanos/as,

Y VIO DIOS TODO LO QUE HABLA HECHO Y AQUI QUE ERA BUENO EN GRAN MANERA  (GENESIS 1:31)

The Lord indeed had to be pleased by what He accomplished this past July in Santa Caterina(SC) Barahona, Guatemala.  Using 35 of His people from New Jersey, PA., and TN.

Over 200 people each day were exposed to His Church and His word.  On Saturday of that week 450 people in the morning and 250 in the afternoon heard His word preached, sung, and read.  The Holy Spirit was working through His people and spread throughout the area surrounding SC.

On Saturday, July 16, 35 people assembled in Antigua, Guatemala and began putting into motion what they had been planning for over a year.  On Monday the 18th they began knocking on doors and distributing information about the Church, the afternoon activities that week, and the conference on the 23rd. .  During the week 3 towns were canvassed.  Each afternoon over 200 people (primarily very young people) came for the arts, crafts, Bible stories, hair cuts, assorted games and more.  The planning had been for no more than 40 to 50 people!!  The group really responded and were able to more than take care of all the people who came.  The activities lasted for nearly 2 and half hours each afternoon.   Each day began with a devotional and ended each night with a devotional.  For many this was the first time to be out of the US and the first time to be in a third world country.  This was also the first for a campaign of this type in Guatemala.  The group consisted of 18 teenagers and 17 adults.  The last day consisted of an all day session of preaching, singing, skits by the teenagers from the US (in Spanish!!)and from the local Church in SC.  This day we all witnessed 2 baptisms!  Praise the Lord.
There was much preparation for the trip.  This included writing and learning the skit in Spanish, songs in Spanish, raising funds and developing the crafts to be done.  Each person had to come up with $800 (the cost of the trip) plus any extra monies they wanted to have.  Everyone had Thursday off and all went to view Lake Atitlian (one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
Preparations are now beginning for next year’s campaign.  This campaign will begin on July 29 and end on August 5 with the group leaving on August 6. If you are interested in joining or perhaps your Church is interested please contact Carl Heffington, 37 Kendall Rd,, Kendall Park, NJ 08824; masterheff@earthlink.net or 732-821-3938.

GUATEMALA FOR CHRIST 2006

We are preparing for our campaign to Guatemala for 2006.  This will be our 5th campaign and each year we have brought the Word of Christ to more and more people.  Praise to the Lord!

Next year we will be leaving on July 29 and returning on August 6.  It will consist of 3 mornings of door to door canvassing and handing out flyers about the Church, activities for during the week and the day of the Conference, August 5.  The afternoons will consist of activities planned by the campaigners.  It is very much like a giant VBS.  We will have something for all ages including adults (primarily women as the men are usually working).  You do not have to know Spanish (of course knowing it is a plus).  This year we had 17 teenagers who were literally Pied Pipers for the Lord.  Some came early to study Spanish for a week (this can be arranged).  Thursday is free and on Friday we will prepare for Saturday.  This preparation will include a great deal of cleaning and probably some painting.  The crafts, games, Bible stories, etc. were organized beforehand by the groups or individuals.  We had one lady who cut hair and did nails.  There could be some work to be done on the Church building or in homes.

COST

The price is $835 which includes plane from Newark ( price may vary according to where you leave).  This is based on $600 air cost.  Includes a room in a posada which will be shared. A posada is similar to our bed and breakfast.  Includes breakfast and lunch.  You are on your own for dinner (can eat cheaply or pay 8-10 dollars for a regular meal).  On Thursay the 3rd you are also on your own for lunch.  Thursday is a free day.  The total cost (excluding the free day and tourist gifts) should be around $950.

Instructions and other information will be forthcoming.  This will be done as people indicate their desire to join the campaign.  Please not that this is only for those who are 15 or older.  All should be fairly independent.  There will be a minimum of supervision The area is very safe and during our 12 years of working in the area we have never seen nor experienced a security problem.

About HIS-CHURCH in Toms River:  The members of HIS-CHURCH in Toms River decided to support The Heffington’s in their work in Antiqua,  though His Congregation is small in numbers (average attendance of 30), we have been blessed by being “Mortgage Free”, we support our Evangelist Pablo Molina part-time. Bro. Molina also goes to Antiqua along with Bro. Heffington to work along with a “Medical Mission” program.

THE HEFFINGTON REPORT

August 26, 2004  Hola mis hermanos (as),

Sorry that it has been a while since you have heard from us.  The Lord has blessed us greatly in this work.  However, we had great sadness when the founder of this work, Troyce Gilbert, died in January.  Troyce was truly a great man of God and will be greatly missed.  He established 4 churches in Guatemala.

The work in Santa Catarina has been going great.  Thanks to the Lord.  All of us have been his messengers and share a part in the ongoing success of this work.  We had a great conference in July.  107 people attended!!  It was an afternoon conference instead of an all day one due to lack of funds.  However, the excitement and participation was great.  This year the team from the U.S.A. consisted of Pablo Molina, Robert King, Claire Heffington and me (Carl).  Robert is 15 and was a huge asset.  He led a devotional, and went door to door in the mornings handing out invitations to the conference. In the afternoons he supervised crafts and sports for the children.  The children loved being with him.  We hope that more young people will be going with us next year.  Robert feels sure that he can get other teens interested.

The latest news from Santa Caterina is that we have added 6 more the congregation.  We have over 20 young people attending and now have a regular attendance of around 40 each Sunday.  The resistance we have met with in the past from 2 other religious groups seems to have abated for now. The week of the conference we went out each morning door-to-door giving out pamphlets and information about the conference.  We went to 3 different small towns, started with a devotional, walked up and down the streets meeting people and telling them of the Good News!  There were at 3-5 members from the Church who helped us.  We gave special t-shirts to the members and we painted the inside of the church building.

We took about 500 pounds of clothing to distribute within the Church, suitable mostly for children.  A really big point of concern was the fact that it took 5 days for luggage for Pablo, Robert & Claire to get to us from Continental Airlines!  We were worried and we wondered if it would be okay – finally, it was. Special thanks to the Clark family – Mark, Tanya & London for the abundance of clothes they provided. They also went the extra mile making sure the clothes and shoes were clean, in excellent condition, and very well packed.  It was an enormous help!  (They did a ton of work!) Claire especially was very thankful when the clothes finally arrived.   We always take clothes to give away.  On the next trip we will take some adult clothes also

We took one day off to ‘play tourist’, driving to Lake Atitlan., and taking a boat tour of three small towns.  It is a very beautiful lake, famous in Guatemala, and a favorite visiting spot for many tourists from everywhere.

Our support has gradually increased.  We had a setback in several ways with the death of Troyce but we were determined that this work would go on, so we have pledged to contribute another $300 a month to enable to work to continue.  The Church in Princeton, N.J. held a special contribution for this work and nearly $2,000 was given directly to Princeton or to us. Plus they contribute $200 a month. Thank you so much!! The Churches in Toms River, N.J. and the Church on Clinton Street in Trenton, N.J. are also contributing. We have a pledge of $35 dollars a month from the Bates family (Tony, Heather & Grace) of Nashville, TN

2005 Write July 16th through the 24th down on your calendars!!  We will be leaving on the 16th for Guatemala and coming back on the 24th.  The conference will be on the 23rd.  We hope many will decide to go with us or join us there.  Each person will need $800 which will cover necessities.  We plan to have a free day to go to an exciting location and it may cost around $50 to play tourist. We will again try to help raise money for those who don’t have quite enough.  The airfare is always the ‘biggie’.  We are asking those who want to go to please send in $200 by the first of  March, 2005.  We will then be able to reserve rooms.  The youngest age to go will be 15 years of age.  If someone is nearly that age then they may be able to go.  Hopefully this amount of notice beforehand will give individuals enough time to raise/save the money to join us.  No one needs to speak Spanish, and those under 18 will always be with an adult.  We will be staying in Antigua which is a very safe and beautiful place (Robert King wants to come every year!)  Once we know who and how many will be coming, we will plan activities.  Hopefully, we will be able to have a basketball team to play with the young people in the area, or soccer (futbol, they call it).  We want to have crafts again, and we really want to have enough people for a puppet show also.

We really appreciate all support.  Please remember that everyone can support us in PRAYER.  We really want to ask for wisdom in decision-making, especially since we hope to live about half the time in Guatemala  after Claire retires in approximately 2 ½ years!

If anyone has any questions or ideas for next year’s conference, please let us hear from you.  We will be happy to hear from you for any reason!  We pray that God will richly bless you in your daily walk.

Love in Christ, The Heffingtons

P.S.  if anyone would like to study Spanish and come early or leave later, let me know.  Staying with a family is $50 a week which includes all meals except Sunday.  The school cost about $80 a week for 4 hours a day of total immersion and one on one teaching.  The family also speaks only Spanish and there are others also staying.
